DASSA Chess Championship Round 1
On 20th November 2024, Jumeirah College in conjunction with Chess Knowledge Dubai proudly hosted the DASSA Chess Championship Round 1, a prestigious event that brought together 65 students from 13 schools across Dubai. The competition followed the Swiss Format with a time control of 5 minutes plus a 1-second increment, ensuring fast-paced and thrilling matches.
The Swiss Format is a popular system for chess tournaments, designed to ensure players or teams of similar skill levels face off. Rather than eliminating participants after a loss, players or teams compete in every round, with pairings based on their ongoing performance. This guarantees a competitive and inclusive environment, making it a favourite for events like these. An outstanding Performance from Jumeirah College chess team
Jumeirah College was represented by five exceptional players: On board 1, there was: Vivaan Rana, board 2: Shaurya Garg, board 3: Junda Chen, board 4: Dhyay Doshi and board 5: Talal Arip. The team was coached by Mr. Evans Chikasa and Mr. Anthony Banton. From the very first round, the students demonstrated the school’s core values of positivity and resilience. After starting the round with a score of 3.5/5, the team refused to settle for anything less than victory. They fought their way through each subsequent round, winning against every school they were paired with.
By the end of the tournament, Jumeirah College secured an impressive 21.5/25 points, clinching first place.
Outstanding Individual Achievements
Three players delivered flawless performances:

The second round of the championship will take place in Term 2, and Jumeirah College is already preparing to defend its title with the same vigour and excellence.
The Role of Chess at Jumeirah College

Critical Thinking: Chess sharpens problem-solving skills and strategic planning.
Resilience: Players learn to adapt to challenges and recover from setbacks.
Focus and Patience: The game develops concentration and the ability to think several steps ahead.
Sportsmanship: Students learn to compete with respect and grace, win or lose.
Social Interaction: Chess creates a platform for students to bond and exchange ideas with peers.
We encourage more students to join the chess community at Jumeirah College and experience firsthand the personal and academic growth that comes from mastering the game.
