Welcome to year 11 Arabic at Jumeirah College

Arabic is spoken by over 160 million people, in an area extending from the Arabian Gulf in the east to the Atlantic Ocean in the west. It is the language of Islam, and more than 600 million people use it as a vital spiritual component of their daily lives.
Arabic is spoken by more than three million people of Arabic origin living in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada. 

Curriculum Organization
• Students receive 3 lessons of Arabic per week.
• Students have the option of choosing Arabic as a GCSE, however, only students who are very motivated should consider choosing Arabic at this level.
• The work covered is from the textbook ‘your Arabic friend’. This book is published by Edexcel which is the exam board we use at GCSE level. (1607)

Independent Study
• Homework will be set twice a week.
• All homework and deadlines will be recorded in students’ planners.
• Homework should be completed to the highest standard and presentation should follow the department’s guidelines.
• Students are encouraged to use language websites to consolidate language learnt in class.

Assessment and Reporting
• Ongoing informal assessment will take place in class throughout the year in the three skills (reading, writing and listening.) There is no speaking component in the GCSE Arabic exam.

December -Year 11 Mock examination in listening, reading, and writing. These exams will be past GCSE papers.

• Throughout the course students will complete a number of past papers.

• There is no coursework option at this level.

GCSE Assessment

• Formal assessment will take place in the 3 skills at the end of Year 11.

Writing 33%

 

Extra Curricular Opportunities:-
There will be an Arabic language club offering students the opportunity to develop their knowledge of Arabic vocabulary and structures. This will enable the students to gain extra practice in the three skills examined at GCSE level.

• Holidays and travel arrangements.
• Accommodation.

• Customs and tradition in some countries.
• Famous personalities.
• Major events and issues.
• The media.
