Year 12

Welcome to Year 12 ART at Jumeirah College

The AS Level Art and Design course in Year 12 has been designed to encourage students to   develop their skills and knowledge acquired at GCSE. Students will explore a diversity of materials, to create a personal and informed response to the set subject.  Students will continue to develop their knowledge of artists and designers, in order to inform their work.

Curriculum Organisation
Students have 6 lessons a week and are taught in mixed ability groups. Lessons are well structured and students are provided with a range of materials and resources.

Independent Study
Expectations are very high at AS Level and students are required to do at least 3 hours a week of independent work and will be given specific tasks for homework.

Assessment and Reporting
Assessment will take place for each objective and students will be graded after each completed task. Regular monitoring takes place to enable all students to reach their potential.

Extra Curricular Opportunities in Art
The Art Department is open every lunch time and after school and students are able to use the materials and receive advice from staff.   Clubs are available and Gallery trips are organised.

Autumn Term:
Independent Unit: this is an independent coursework project with work shop based activities.  In this project students will develop an in depth understanding in creating a rich visual language within the context of selected ideas. Students will be given the opportunity to build on their previous skills and will experiment with a wide range of media and methods, learning how to transform materials in order to reflect the different qualities of their observed forms and images. Through an informed use of visual language, students can more successfully develop and communicate their ideas.

Spring Term.
The Exam will contain suggestions for a starting point.  Students will have 12 school weeks to prepare for the timed test. During this time they will explore the theme in depth, within their journals/sketchbook and through preparatory studies. The final examination lasts 8 hours, within this time students will produce their final idea. Their preparatory and developmental work, along with the final pieces will then be submitted for assessment.

Students return during the end of the summer term after their examinations, they will complete a work placement and receive an essential introduction to yr 13 coursework topics. The summer vacation provides an excellent opportunity for research and inspirational studies for this work.
