Welcome to Year 10 Design Technology at Jumeirah College

Curriculum Organisation
- 3 Lessons/week
- 2 groups – Option Block A and Option Block B
  Both Groups are Mixed Ability
- Course books used -
A wide variety of GCSE Resistant Materials text books are
used. Class sets of the most important books are available and frequently used. In addition the Department has a large
selection of up to date, high quality, topic specific books available for staff and students’ reference.

Independent Study
- Expectations -
Students are given homework each week. At this level,
They are expected to do much of their design portfolio
outside of classroom time. As a general guide, students
  should spend at least 1 ½ hours each week on Design & Technology.

Assessment and Reporting
- Nature and frequency of assessments –
Students are expected to hand their design work in as
it is completed each week, for formative assessment.
Final assessment of work is undertaken at the end of each module of work. The duration of each module varies
and may be anything from 1 to 12 weeks depending on the task set.
- Monitoring progress –
Students progress is tracked continually. Individual students are able to monitor their own performance against those of their peers by looking at the paper copy of the tracking sheet stored in the teacher’s planner.
- Students’ attainment is assessed in accordance with
GCSE guidelines.
- Reporting –
The standard JC format is used.

 Useful websites – The numerous websites that students can access to aid their progress are brought to the students’ attention throughout the course.

Following the design process over a period of 12 weeks, students will design and make a coffee table within the context of responding to an identified client’s needs.
A wide range of practical skills related to working with wood will be learned and practiced. In the course of following the Design Process, Homeworks will all be related to researching, investigating, analysing, specifying criteria, designing and developing solutions and Testing and Evaluating outcomes.
To understand and gain experience in working through the Design Process. To produce a successful product in the medium of wood.
Differentiation is built into the lesson planning, with all students continually encouraged and challenged to extend their knowledge and experience and push the boundaries of their own perception of what they are capable of achieving.

Extra Curricular Opportunities in Resistant Materials
 Clubs – Students have the opportunity to spend extra curricular time in the workshop at lunch times and after school when necessary.
 Trips – Due to the demands for workshop time in order to cover the required elements of the course, there are no off site trips at present.
 Visits – Students will have the opportunity to undertake a 1 week work experience in a DT related field in term 3.

Through a number of short focussed tasks throughout the term, students will learn to understand the properties and gain practical experience in working with plastics and metals.

Summer Term
 Areas of Study – GCSE Coursework

Students will commence their major coursework.
They will put into practice all the knowledge and skills that they have gained so far. Homeworks will all be related to the production of their final Coursework portfolio. Students’ achievement will be carefully monitored and continual formative assessment will be
