Welcome to Year 9 Design Technology at Jumeirah College
This subject offers an opportunity for students to develop their designing and making skills. The opportunities to access the higher levels are in place this year and activities will include a greater degree of analytical activity. Two tasks will be workshop based and one will focus on communication skills.
Curriculum Organisation
- 1 lesson per week
- Teaching groups /Mixed Ability
- A wide variety of textbooks and images are used for introducing projects and forming/cutting processes. The website is also an excellent tool in this subject for guided research activities.
Independent Study
- All students will have planning, designing , safety and exercises relating to materials.
- One homework per week will be set during the designing and evaluation stages.
Assessment and Reporting
- Projects last for the duration of one term.
- Students are given a short written test toward the end of the project based on safety, language, materials, processes and communication skills.
- All students present their work to the class and complete a self-assessment activity.
- We use the school wide monitoring system for marking notebooks with traffic lights and written comments where appropriate.
- The National curriculum levels are referred to in class and during all assessment activities;
- Report levels and grades are based on all of these assessment activities, however 60% of any grade is based on ongoing classroom and homework performance.

Autumn Term Manipulating/ joining Aluminium/ Hurricane lamps
- Designing skills, prototypes,
- Prototype model of lamp using split pins to represent rivets
- To understand the properties of aluminium and its application for designed products. Riveting process
- Extension opportunity:To explore industrial and cutting edge ideas which implement the properties of aluminium and composites.
Spring Term Manipulating/forming and assembling acrylic/ clocks

- Hwk/Exploring methods of telling the time
- To become confident with the marking out, cutting and forming of acrylic.
- Testing and exploring a variety of 3d forms using the hot wire strip heater

Summer Term Communication skills/ Packaging
- Isometric, nets, fonts, printing colours , instructions, logos, types of font.
- Independent use of the CAMM 1 vinyl cutting machine
- To produce a package which protects, promotes and informs.
- Investigate a wide variety of ideas which include alternative materials other than card. E.g. cork, thin acrylic, HIP ETC.,
