Year 7

Welcome to Year 7 Design Technology at Jumeirah College

Pupils use a wide range of materials to design and make products. They work out their ideas with some precision, taking into account how products will be used, who will use them, how much they cost and their appearance.

Curriculum Organisation
- One lesson [one hour] per week
- Mixed ability
- A wide variety of books and images are used for reference throughout the process.
Web-sites are also an excellent point of reference for design work.

Independent Study
- All students will need to practise design drawing skills at home. Specific tasks will be set. Essential research tasks will also be set.
- One homework per week will be set during the designing and evaluation stages.

Assessment and Reporting
The assessment is based on 50% designing, planning and evaluation, 50% making.
Each project will last for the duration of one term. At the end of each project year 7 will: present their work to the class
 Sit a 30 minute theory test

Extra Curricular Opportunities in Design Technology
- There is a KS3 Design Technology club held one evening a week after school.

Autumn Term
Structures
-Natural and man-made structures.forces.frames.monocoques.geodesic domes.

Spring Term
Plastics and forming
-Thermosets, theroplastics, rubber. Properties. Forming methods. Isometric drawing
Prototypes.
Learning objectives
-To understand the application of plastics within product design.
- To understand the application of prototypes within the design process.

Summer Term
Packaging
Isometric, nets, layouts,fonts, colour palettes, printing colours. Recycling.
Learning objectives
-To understand packagings role in the protection and promotion of goods.
-To understand the variety of materials and their properties suitable for packaging.
-To understand the selection and suitability of materials for packaging.
