AS Literature & Language

Welcome to Year 12 English Language and Literature at Jumeirah College

In Year 12 we follow the Edexcel Syllabus for English Language and Literature. The AS Level consists of 2 units: Exploring voices in speech and writing, and Creating texts.

Curriculum Organisation
- 6 lessons per week, 2 teachers with 3 lessons each
- Unit 1 Exploring voices in speech and writing – examined in June 2009
- Unit 2 Creating texts - Coursework due December 2008/January 2009

Independent Study
- As with all AS Level courses there is an understanding that students take responsibility for their own independent study in addition to the prescribed homework tasks set by the class teacher.
- Homework tasks (essays, research, case studies) set at the end of each key phase of learning (typically monthly) with formal written feedback given using exam board criteria.

Assessment and Reporting
Unit 1- Exploring voices in speech and writing
• Exam: 2 hours 15 minutes
• Clean copies of the prescribed examination texts will be used in the examination
• Short question style – data response to unseen material

Unit 2 – Creating texts
• Coursework folder containing: one piece written for a reading audience; one piece written for a listening audience and one commentary on the writing process for each piece of work.
• Prescribed list of topic areas, free choice of literary and non-fiction texts

- Progress reports to parents on a regular basis
- Regular timed assessments with formal written feedback which references the exam criteria
