AS Literature

Welcome to Year 12 English Literature at Jumeirah College

In Year 12 we follow the AQA Syllabus Specification B for English Literature. AS Level consists of 2 units- Aspects of Narrative and Dramatic Genres.

Curriculum Organisation
- 6 lessons per week, 2 teachers with 3 lessons each
- Unit 1 Aspects of Narrative– Examined in June 2009
- Unit 2 Dramatic Genres- Coursework due December 2008/January 2009

Independent Study
- As with all AS Level courses there is an understanding that students take responsibility for their own independent study in addition to the prescribed homework tasks set by the class teacher.
- Homework tasks (essays, research, case studies) set at the end of each key phase of learning (typically monthly) with formal written feedback given using exam board criteria.

Assessment and Reporting
• Unit 1- Examination
• Four texts must be studied.
• Section A;  Prose - At least one text written post-1990 from a list including Arundhati Roy, Ann Tyler, Khaled Hosseini, Andrea Levy, Ian McEwan, Sebastien Faulks and Mark Haddon
• One text written pre 1990 from a list including Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, James Joyce, F Scott Fitzgerald
• Section B – Poetry 1800-1945: Tennyson, Browning, Coleridge, Keats, Auden, Hardy and Rossetti.
• Written Exam; 2 hours open book
• 50% of total AS / 25% of total A Level marks
• Unit 2- Coursework x2
• At least two plays within the dramatic genre of tragedy. At least one of the plays must be by Shakespeare.
• A portfolio of two pieces of written coursework. (One may be re-creative):
• first piece on an aspect of dramatic/tragic genre with regard to a Shakespeare play. 1200 - 1500 words
• Second piece on an aspect of dramatic/tragic genre with regard to another play. 1200 - 1500 words.
• 50% of total AS / 25% of total A Level marks
• Progress reports to parents on a regular basis

Autumn Term
• Introduction and exploration of drama and tragic genre 
• Shakespeare tragedies and begin reading play e.g. Othello
• Begin reading second tragedy e.g. The Crucible, A Streetcar Named Desire
• Compose short re-creative response
• Aspects of essay structure and style
• Review selected scenes from play during drafting process
• First draft of coursework due
• Redrafting and feedback
• Begin Narrative poetry from the list above.
• Final Coursework Submissions
