Welcome to Year 10 English at Jumeirah College

In Year 10, we follow the National Curriculum building on skills in reading, writing and speaking and listening acquired at Key Stage 3. We begin working towards the completion of English and English Literature GCSEs. We currently complete both of these qualifications using AQA Specification A. In Year 10, there is a strong focus on the coursework components of these courses.

Curriculum Organisation
- 4 lessons per week
 - Three-tiered setting, with classes set according to prior attainment

Independent Study
  - Homework on average for two hours per week. Homework is often coursework driven and may involve working on extended pieces over a number of weeks.

Assessment and Reporting
- Half-termly assessments using GCSE grades
  - Progress reports to parents on a regular basis
  - Coursework drafts marked with areas for improvement and GCSE grades 

Extra Curricular Opportunities in English
- Readers’ and Writers’ Club
- Debating
- Coursework booster sessions

Autumn Term
- Modern Drama (for example, An Inspector Calls, Educating Rita or A Streetcar Named Desire) and Writing to argue/persuade/advise and writing to inform/explain/describe
- Reading (drama)/writing skills focused with opportunities for speaking and listening work
- Key homeworks: Modern Drama coursework draft and writing tasks
- Learning objectives: reading and writing skills directed towards the skills outlined in AQA Specification A GCSE coursework and exam mark schemes.
- Extension opportunities: coursework booster sessions


Spring Term
- Shakespeare and Pre-1914 Prose (for example, Great Expectations, Pride and Prejudice, Victorian Short Stories)
- Reading skills focused with opportunities for speaking and listening work
- Key homeworks: Shakespeare/Pre-1914 Drama and Pre-1914 Prose/Prose study coursework drafts
- Learning objectives: reading skills directed towards the skills outlined in AQA Specification A GCSE coursework and exam mark schemes.
- Extension opportunities: coursework booster sessions

Summer Term
- Poetry from Other Cultures and Media coursework
- Reading (drama)/writing skills focused with opportunities for speaking and listening work
- Key homeworks: Media coursework draft and analytical responses to Poems from Other Cultures
- Learning objectives: reading and writing skills directed towards the skills outlined in AQA Specification A GCSE coursework and exam mark schemes.
