Year 11
Welcome to Year 11 French at Jumeirah College
It is estimated that French is spoken by 76 million people as a native language throughout the world and by about 280 million people as a second or third language. French is the official language in 31 countries throughout the world and has significant speakers in 54 countries.
In Year 11 students will continue to develop their French language skills through listening, speaking, reading and writing exercises in preparation for their GCSE exams.
They will study five main topic areas:
• Bon appetit Talking about meals and eating habits
• Ca m’interesse Talking about leisure activities
• Nouveaux horizons Exchanging opinions on different types of holidays
• A votre sante Talking about common holiday ailments
• Projets d’avenir Talking about exams revision and future plans
Curriculum Organisation
• Students receive 2 lessons of French per week.
• The department sets students according to test results and the end of year 10 examination.
• The work covered is from the textbook Encore Tricolore 4. This is supplemented with worksheets and online exercises.
Independent Study
• Homework will be set twice a week.
• All homework and deadlines will be recorded in students’ planners.
• Homework should be completed to the highest standard and presentation should follow the department’s guidelines.
• Students are encouraged to use language websites to consolidate language learnt in class.
• Our library is stocked with a number of French books and magazines which provide extension activities for our students.
Assessment and Reporting
• Ongoing informal assessment will take place in class throughout the year in all four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking).
• Selected pieces of written work will be formally assessed and make up the students coursework portfolio.
• Students will complete exam practice in reading and listening.
GCSE Assessment
• Formal assessment will take place in the 3 skills at the end of Year 11:

Coursework 25% (Continuous assessment in Years 10 / 11).
Students will be entered for either the Foundation or Higher paper in each skill. This will be decided following a teacher – student discussion prior to completing the examination entries form. (Feb / March)
Coursework
The written aspect of the course follows the continuous assessment route
(coursework). Students will complete approximately 5 pieces of coursework on a variety of themes over a 2 year period. The best 3 pieces will be selected by the subject teacher in March of Year 11. The three pieces have to be selected from different themes and one must have been completed under controlled conditions. A moderation day will take place after the Easter holidays.

Spring Term (Units 8 / 9)
• Exchanging information about different types of holiday and giving preferences

(NB the speaking exam is generally the first exam to take place out of the 3 skills. (April – May)
