Year 10

Welcome to Year 10 French at Jumeirah College

It is estimated that French is spoken by 76 million people as a native language throughout the world and by about 280 million people as a second or third language. French is the official language in 31 countries throughout the world and has significant speakers in 54 countries.

In Year 10 students will continue to develop their French language skills through listening, speaking, reading and writing exercises in preparation for their GCSE exams.

They will study six main topic areas:
• Etudes    Talking about school
• Chez moi   Talking about home and routine
• Temps libre   Talking about hobbies and free time
• Au boulot   Talking about work and future plans
• Ma ville   Talking about town / environmental issues
• Aux magasins   Talking about shopping

Curriculum Organisation
• Students receive 2 lessons of French per week.
• The department sets students according to test results in the end of year 9 examination.
• The work covered is from the textbook Metro 4 for AQA. This is supplemented with worksheets and online exercises. Metro 4 is a new course book and students will continue to use this text book in Year 11.

Independent Study
• Homework will be set twice a week.
• All homework and deadlines will be recorded in students’ planners.
• Homework should be completed to the highest standard and presentation should follow the department’s guidelines.
• Students are encouraged to use language websites to consolidate language learnt in class.
• Our library is stocked with a number of French books and magazines which provide extension activities for our students.

Assessment and Reporting
• Ongoing informal assessment will take place in class throughout the year in all four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking).
• Selected pieces of written work will be formally assessed and make up the students coursework portfolio.
• Students will complete exam practice in reading and listening.

 


GCSE Assessment

• Formal assessment will take place in the 3 skills at the end of Year 11:
 Weighting:

Listening 25%
Reading 25%
Speaking 25%
Coursework 25% (Continuous assessment in Years 10 / 11).

Students will be entered for either the Foundation or Higher paper in each skill. This will be decided in Year 11 following a teacher – student discussion prior to completing the examination entries form. (Feb / March)

Coursework
The written aspect of the course follows the continuous assessment route       
(coursework). Students will complete approximately 2 / 3 pieces of coursework at the end of selected modules in Year 10. Students will complete 4/ 5 pieces of coursework by the end of Year 11.The best 3 pieces will be selected by the subject teacher in March of Year 11. The three pieces have to be from different themes and one must have been completed under controlled conditions.

Coursework: 4.2 Publicising an environmental issue

 

Formal Assessment
Students in Year 10 will complete an end of year exam in listening, speaking and reading. They will complete past GCSE papers at both Foundation and Higher levels in listening and reading and will complete a speaking assessment in line with the GCSE oral exam that they will sit at the end of Year 11.
