Year 7

Welcome to Year 7 French at Jumeirah College

It is estimated that French is spoken by 76 million people as a native language throughout the world and by about 280 million people as a second or third language. French is the official language in 31 countries and has significant speakers in 54 countries.
In Year 7 students will develop their language through listening, speaking, reading and writing activities.

They will study six main topic areas:
• Bienvenue!   Greetings, classroom language. Numbers 1-20
• Toi et moi.    Saying where you live. Talking about your family and pets.
• Au collège  Talking about school subjects, describing your timetable and uniform.
• Mes loisirs  Talking about what you do in your free time.
• Chez moi  Talking about where you live and describing your home.
• Les vacances  Talking about holidays.

Curriculum Organisation
• Students receive 2 lessons of French per week.
• Teaching groups are of mixed ability and students remain in their form groups for these.
• The work covered is from the textbook Métro1. This is supplemented with worksheets, online exercises and a homework booklet (cahier d’exercises) to supplement the text book.

Independent Study
• Homework will be set once a week.
• All homework and deadlines will be recorded in students’ planners.
• Homework should be completed to the highest standard and presentation should follow the department’s guidelines.
• Students are encouraged to use language websites to consolidate language learnt in class.
• Our library is stocked with a number of French books and magazines which provide extension material for the students.

Assessment and Reporting
• Ongoing informal assessment will take place in class throughout the year in all four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking).
• Selected pieces of homework and classwork are also assessed throughout the year according to National Curriculum guidelines and a National Curriculum level of attainment will be given.
• Students are provided with a sheet on which to keep track of their level of attainment for each of the four skills. Where written assignments are given, students will be provided with feedback based on How To Improve in order to achieve the next level. Each student will be provided with an HTI guideline containing a list of all targets (T1-T20).
• There will be a formal examination at the end of the year based on all of the topics covered.

Autumn Term objectives

• Saying your name, asking someone’s name, greeting someone and asking how someone is.
• Meeting , greeting  and saying goodbye.
• Understanding classroom instructions.
• Talking about classroom objects.
• Using numbers 1-31
• Saying where you live and what nationality you are.
• Talking about your family and pets.
• Saying how tall you are and describing how you look.

Key Assessment
End of module tests in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

National Curriculum Information

• Talking about school subjects.
• Telling the time and describing your school timetable.
• Describing a day at school.
• Talking about your school uniform.
• Talking about sports and opinions.
• Talking about what sports you do in your free time.
• Talking about other free time activities.
• Talking about what you do at the weekend.
• Talking about the weather.

End of module tests in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

• Talking about what you do at home.

• Talking about where places are in a town.

End of year examination in 4 skills. The language content of the exam will cover the themes studied throughout Modules 1 – 6. Achievable levels 1-5
